We really liked the Dachshund pencil case (which comes with a printable template) so we decided we needed more unique DIY pencil cases – this bookworm paper roll pencil case is perfect for “back to school” day.
This would look great at home or in the classroom, and the really cool thing is that you can make it as long as you need. You can use 3 rolls of paper or a dozen (or more).
It can hold all sorts of school supplies, from colored pencils to markers and scissors. Depending on the length and weight of your school supplies, you may need to tape the pencil holder to the surface (regular markers hold up well, but I also have longer double markers—almost half as long as a regular marker—that can tip the pencil holder).
Are you ready to make your own pencil case? Let’s do it!

Paint the rolls green or wrap them in green paper (regular printer paper works best).
Make the cup. Sketch out the cup – we used the lid of a small cream jar to draw two overlapping circles.Cut them out.
Also, cut out two smaller white circles.Glue them to the inside of the grey glasses and draw black dots for the eyes.
Now glue the glass to one of the green paper rolls.Draw a mouth on the paper roll.
Staple all the blue paper rolls together. You can pin the part with the glass a little higher than the other parts. Now let’s make a book for bookworms.Cut out a red rectangle and fold it in half. This is the book cover.
Also, cut out white rectangles (smaller than the red rectangle), fold them in half, and doodle on the pages to create a book-like shape.Glue or staple the pages and book covers together.Cut two hands out of green paper. Glue them onto the bookworm.Apply glue to the end of the hands (you can fold them over a bit).Stick the book into the bookworm’s hand. And that’s it, your DIY Bookworm Paper Roll Pencil Case is finished and ready to hold pencils!Want instant access to all of our printable crafts, activities, and resources?
