Easter is the perfect time of year for this project, not only because of the chicks, but also because you can use egg dye to dye the feathers – which makes the project even more fun.
We love getting our feathers “in the wild” (or on a farm ;), nature always makes the best crafting materials – once collected they can be washed (but be gentle with them and use a little fabric softener). Once they are completely dry, there are many different ways you can dye them (even using Kool Aid) and marvel at their amazing beauty.
These things can’t get any cuter, right? Oh but wait….

How to make a DIY chicken planter
What you need:
- Mini terracotta planters/pots (it is important that these planters are actually terracotta, as the paint will not adhere to other materials)
- your favorite succulent along with soil
- acrylic paint (or other craft paint) – orange, yellow or other colors, let the sky be the limit
- hot glue (strong craft glue works well too, but a glue gun is best)
- drag
- permanent black marker
- paint brush
- Feathers (preferably natural or cruelty-free) – or you can also cut wings from craft foam or similar – pre-dyed or dyed yourself
- orange cardboard
Step by step instructions
Wipe the terracotta pots with a dry cloth, just to remove any dust (especially if they have been stored for a while). Apply the first coat of yellow paint and let it dry slightly.
Depending on the brand (pigment, density…) of the paint, you will need to apply a few more coats (on average 2-3 coats).
Let the paint dry completely before you continue. We think orange, yellow, and blue look really cute for DIY Chick Planters.
Glue the dyed feathers to the pot – two on the sides (outside) and one on the top (inside).
Repeat with other pots.
Sketch the eye with a pencil and once you are happy with the look, go over it with a permanent marker.
Cut a beak out of paper or craft foam and glue it between the eyes.
Fill the pot with soil and plant the succulent.
