This fun paper cup octopus craft has so many uses. First is the whole quirky art aspect of it – where kids get to make it. They can make their octopus as quirky as they want and in every color of the rainbow.

This octopus can make many silly faces or emotions.

So this product would be great to use as a toy while kids play, to add to story time, or as a tool for talking about or dealing with emotions.

Are you ready? Let’s create an octopus that can change its emotions (or any other creature).

Follow these step-by-step instructions

Take one of the paper cups and draw an octopus on it. You can sketch it out in pencil first so you can “fix” things if needed. The head/body of the octopus needs to be wide and big enough (take a larger part of the cup).

Once you are happy with your octopus craft design, trace it over with a black marker.

The color of the octopus. The color doesn’t really matter but we thought a bright pink would look nice.

Permanent markers will work better although you can just as easily use paint (acrylic, etc).

Adults Only: Use a craft knife to cut a rectangle in the head area (we marked it with a pencil to make it easier to cut). Be very careful as the curved surface makes the knife not easy to use (or maybe I’m just clumsy with knives).

Now that you have one cup with a hole, take the other cup and push it inside the cup with the hole (the octopus above).

Take a regular pencil and draw a rectangle (through the rectangle hole) to create a rectangular outline on the inside of the cup. Rotate the cup slightly, move the square outside the rectangle, and draw another rectangular outline. Repeat until you reach the end.

Take out the cup. Draw different facial expressions inside the rectangle outlines. Happy, angry, confused, silly, sad, whatever you like.

Color around the face (and on the edges of the rectangle) with the same color you used for the octopus’ body.

Let the color dry a little to avoid smudging (it won’t take long).

Place the cup with the octopus body on top of the cup with the face.

Spin the paper cups and have fun watching this paper cup octopus change its face.
