This is a great craft idea for Chinese New Year because it’s so colorful and because the Moon dragons look so cool.

How to make fire breathing crafts from Chinese dragons

What you need:

  • our printable template (optional) or hand-drawn dragon head
  • white printing paper
  • cardstock paper in any color of your choice (we love how black paper looks with this craft)
  • drag
  • glue

Step-by-step instructions

Are you ready for the joys of Lunar New Year? Grab a sheet of cardboard, print out our template and let the kids add their own colors to the Chinese dragon if you choose the black and white version.

If your child is using black and white printouts, have them color them first.

Cut off the head of the Chinese dragon.

Then, mark the dragon’s mouth with a pencil. This will make the next steps easier.

Have children apply glue to the marked position.

Glue the colored strips to the cardboard.

Glue all of them. We used 6 orange colors and 2 yellow colors. If you are working with older children, you can ask them to use more strips of paper.

Take a strip of paper (on the outer edge) and make a few loops.

Add glue to the end of the rolled paper strip.

Stick the paper strip to the background, hold it in place for a while to let the glue harden.

Repeat with other strips of paper to create flames.

It’s time to add the Chinese dragon head! Have your child apply glue to the back of it.

And stick it on the fire.

The Chinese New Year dragon craft is complete!
