What you need

  • wood plank (soft wood like pine is best for young children) – display dimensions are 5″ x 10″ x1/2″
  • steel nails (use 18x 3/4″)
  • hammer nail
  • Wool yarns – bright yellow Red Heart, spring green Red Heart and pale crimson Bernat were used
  • pencil
  • drag

Use a pencil to lightly trace a flower shape onto the board. Leave about 1/2″ space between the edge of the board and the edge of the flower.

Draw a flower

Start nailing. Start in the middle of the flower and follow the pencil circle, older kids can do it themselves, younger kids will need some help. Nail about half way through the wood. Space nails about 1/2″ – 3/4″ apart.

Nail

Continue with the petals, stems and leaves.

Wash your hands to remove the metal layer from all nails.

Start stringing flowers. Start with purple, followed by yellow in the middle.

Yarn

Start stringing your board. Wrap the yarn around a petal nail and double knot.

There’s no right or wrong way to nail boards – but zigzagging and skipping at least one nail usually looks best.

Once you are happy with how the petals look, start sketching. Start at one nail and bring the yarn to the next nail, wrapping it around the entire nail head. When finished, bring the yarn back to the starting point and tie the two strands together. Trim the yarn.

Continue with the yellow middle section and finish with the green stem. Follow the same instructions, zigzag, then outline, then trim.

The problems you will encounter are: you will be walking around, wrapping yarn around the nail head and suddenly one will slip halfway off. Try sliding it back or unwrapping the yarn so you can fix it. The other frustration will be when you are stringing and suddenly the yarn seems to slip off some nails! To prevent this, you need to wrap yarn around the entire nail head, about 5 nails. (Does that make sense? String five nails, wrap yarn around the nail head and continue).
