We really love making puppets! This printable hippo puppet joins the ranks of our talking little puppets!

We’ve shared quite a few of them with you (both free and paid) – for example, the elephant puppet would be a great companion for this puppet. Can’t you just listen to all the fun conversations these two puppets would have when controlled by your child? So much fun!

Ready to make your own puppet? Just print our template and have fun with it.

How to use the Hippo Puppet Print Template

What you need:

  • our printable template (you can get this template at the end of this tutorial, we also have a large puppet set available as a bundle)
  • thicker printing paper (regular printer paper is best, although regular printer paper will also work)
  • drag
  • glue
  • scoring tool
  • coloring materials

See step by step instructions

Print out the template – there are two pages and you will need both. We recommend printing on thicker cardstock/printing paper as this will make the puppet more durable, but regular printer paper will also be fine.

Color the puppet template. On the face page, you only need to color the middle third of the face design because the other two thirds will not be visible when the puppet is finished.

We like to colour our puppets with markers as this makes them really stand out – crayons or colored pencils work too. We made our hippo a blue grey.

Also, color the accessories (ears). Cut out a pair of ears and teeth.

You can make your teeth slightly yellow or keep them white.

Back to the first page.

Fold along all the dotted lines.

Use a craft stick (or similar) to run over the creases to crisp them up. This will make folding easier.

Unfolds after each fold.

Place the paper on the table, design side facing in.

Fold the “third” part that says glue over – apply glue.

Close it by folding the third part on the other side over the part with the glue word.

Press firmly to let the glue set (you can even hold a book down, the waiting will be easier that way).

Once the glue is dry, paint yellow along the dashed lines to form an M shape.

Your hippo puppet is almost done – just add ears and teeth.

Take the ear, fold along the dotted line separating the ear and the rectangle – apply glue and stick to the head.

Do the same with the teeth – fold along the dashed lines – but glue them to the inside of the mouth.

Put your fingers in the holes and chat!
