How to Draw a Fish Step by Step Tutorial for Kids + Printable

Want to learn how to draw a fish? We will share the simplest tutorial that will teach you how to draw. Along with a printable step by step template.

With just a few simple and detailed movements, your fish is ready to swim away – perfect for young children (preschool, kindergarten, first grade…) and beginners (aka beginners).

There are many different ways you can draw a fish but this drawing tutorial will show you the easiest way to draw a fish. Your child (and you) will learn how to draw a fish in no time!

To make things easier, we’ve prepared a video tutorial, a step-by-step fish drawing guide that you can follow, and even a printable template with guided drawing instructions. Just print and draw!

Since the temperature is quite high here and we just want to jump into the ocean to cool off, we’re going to share a series of ocean animal drawing tutorials, starting with this fish.

How to draw a fish

Since this is the easiest fish to draw so far (we will share more about this fish in the future), it is perfect for use in preschool and kindergarten. Print out copies of our printable drawing templates and let your kids build their confidence in drawing.

What you need:

  • our printable template (you can get it at the end of this drawing tutorial)
  • paper
  • printer
  • black marker (or pencil, crayon,…)

Optional: coloring material to color your finished piece.

You can find our printable guided drawing template at the end of this drawing tutorial.

Start by drawing a curve. Starting on the left, draw a curve and go down to the right.

Now draw the same curve in reverse. You can see the fish shape.

Now draw a straight line for the head and tail.

Draw fins. Dorsal fin and one body fin.

Add some details to the face. A nice smile and some nice round eyes.

And some finishing touches. Draw details on the tail and fins and add some bubbles.

We didn’t draw fish scales in this tutorial but we added them when coloring the drawing.
