The joy on your child’s face when they create their own puppet is indescribable. This is more than just a craft. It’s a toy. It’s a friend.

Puppetry may seem complicated, but it’s actually very easy to make and you probably already have everything you need around the house – if not, there’s still plenty of room for creativity.

How to Make a Dog Puppet

What you need:

  • 3 rolls of toilet paper
  • Paint of your choice
  • drag
  • 2 googly eyes or markers to draw eyes
  • 1 sheet of colored paper or a magazine page (optional) and a circular ruler
  • glue (glue gun if supervised by adult)
  • pencil
  • 2 wooden bars
  • 5 pipe cleaning sticks (optional)
  • wool
  • 1 cork
  • Craft knife (adults only!!!)
  • we used a small piece of self adhesive white glitter foam for the nose, but anything, even just paint would work

Materials used

Step by step instructions

Paint 3 rolls of paper. We are making our dog brown, any color will do.

Step 1Body

Optional for dots: using a circular ruler and pencil, draw 10 small circles and 2 larger circles on colored paper.

Step 2

Then cut them out.

Step 2-1

Use scissors to cut 4 holes in the paper roll for the legs (with adult supervision).

You can also use a hole punch.

Step 3

Leave an equal distance between them.

Step 3-1

Apply some glue to 10 circles and stick them onto the paper roll.

Step 4

Cut two long pieces of yarn and thread them through the holes.

Step 5

Now cut two more holes in the middle of the body, opposite the legs.

Step 6

Thread a long piece of yarn through them.

Step 7

Take another roll of toilet paper and cut it 1/3 of the way down.

Step 8

The larger piece will be used for the head. We will use the smaller piece later.

Head

Punch two holes in the middle of the toilet paper roll.

Step 9

Now measure the amount of space you want to leave between the body and head and tie a knot.

Step 10

Place the head in (thread the yarn through the holes).

Step 11Handheld controller

Wrap 2 cotton swabs around the wooden stick and cut the excess off the stick.

Repeat this step one more time so you have two equal wooden sticks wrapped with cotton swabs.

Make an X shape and use the 5th cotton swab to secure them in the middle.

Step 12 to 12-3

Pull your dog straight up and make sure the yarn on both sides is the same length.

Step 13

Then, apply a little glue to one end of the X shape and glue the yarn in.

Step 14Eyes

Glue two larger circles on top of the head and add bulging eyes on top of those circles.

Step 15Ears and Nose

Cut the third roll of paper and flatten it. Draw two dog ears and glue them to the head as shown.

Then draw and cut out a small nose from white glitter self-adhesive foam.

Put your nose in.

Step 016 to 16-2Tongue

With the remaining 1/3 of the roll, roll a tongue…

Step 17

…and stick it inside your mouth.

Step 17-2The feet

Take the cork and divide it into 4 equal parts, then use a craft knife to cut them.

Then color the parts with acrylic paint and let dry.

The cork circles will act as the feet.

Step 18 to 18-3

Place 4 cork rings in (thread them onto the yarn), then make legs of equal length…

Step 19

…and tie four strong knots. Cut off the excess thread.

Step 19-1

The tail

From the leftover paper used for the ears, we cut a small tail and glued it to the dog’s body.Step 20

Yay, we’re done here!

Complete

Now start moving the joystick up and down, left and right and see how silly Moggy Mog gets.
