Optic Illusion Cat Art Idea

Combining optical illusions with art – let’s make this optical illusion cat art idea together. This project can be done year-round and it makes a great Halloween art project.

Once your child does this project, they’ll want to do a series of similar projects themselves.

We did ours red, however any color will work with this. You can also use two colors.

How to create illusionistic cat art

What you need:

printable template (optional)
a marker of your choice (we recommend a marker for this project)

Step-by-step instructions

Print a template or sketch of a cat on striped paper.

You can also draw the eyes (now or at the end).

Starting from the top row, have children color in the pattern – have them color in the first empty row.

Continue to the third row, leaving the second row blank (or paint it a different color)!

Now, don’t color the inside of the cat shape. Just focus on coloring the outer parts of the cat shape.

Continue coloring every second row down.

It’s time to use optical illusion magic!

We will consider the rows that are not colored. In those rows, color inside the cat silhouette.

Work your way through all the rows.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Who knew art could be so mysterious and wonderful?
