Paper Heart Flower Craft with Template

We have another awesome heart and flower craft to share with you! This paper heart flower craft is perfect for both Mother’s Day (a great alternative to your typical Mother’s Day card) or Valentine’s Day.

This is also a great flower craft idea for kids to make any day of the year when they just want to spread the love!

We love when one idea inspires another – since you guys loved our DIY heart-shaped handmade notebook so much, we decided to create a “spinoff” if you will.

After some thinking, a heart shaped flower craft idea came to mind. So much fun! Designing this idea was easy since we already had our DIY heart shaped craft notebook but there was one “problem”.

Once the flower is done and folded, it looks cute, but when you first open it, it doesn’t return to the heart shape I expected. But don’t worry! The bees will come to the rescue!

So I also designed a bee that, when glued to a paperclip or a small clothespin, can hold everything together neatly (as well as add a touch of cuteness to the whole project).

The bee craft template is also available for you to print but we would prefer if kids designed their own.

Are you ready to make your own paper heart flowers? Let’s do it!

Handmade paper heart flowers

What you need:

  • Paper heart flower craft template (you can find it at the end of this tutorial)
  • a blank sheet of paper if the child will design the flower themselves or a colorful sheet of paper (red, pink, orange…)
  • green paper
  • yellow paper (optional)
  • green paper straws
  • markers to color the bee
  • mini paper clip or clothespin
  • transparent tape
  • drag
  • glue

Optional: other coloring media – we used ink

Watch Video Tutorial on Making Paper Heart Flowers

Or follow the step-by-step instructions below

Print out the flower craft template (you can get it at the end of this tutorial)

You can print the template on white paper and let your child decorate it as they like or you can print it on colored paper.

We used regular printer paper to make this craft.

Cut out the flower shape.

This step is optional but we think it’s really cute!

Cut a circle from yellow paper and glue it onto the flower shape.

Write your message (it’s perfect if it’s a card).

Now fold the flower shape as shown below. Unfold it.

Fold at right angles to the first fold (as shown). Unfold.

Fold again, this time at a 45 degree angle to one of the previous folds (between the first two folds) as shown in the image below.

This next step is a little tricky the first time you do it. But once you get the hang of it, it’s really a piece of cake! I recommend watching the video tutorial for this step.

You need to push the last fold inside the flower shape.

Start on one side and push into the other.

You will see a heart shape.

Color the bee and cut it out (if you print on white paper, you can color the bee on that paper, otherwise there is a separate sheet of paper with a picture of a bee that you can print on white paper).

Stick it on a clothespin or stick it on a paper clip.

Clip it to the heart shape.

Take a green paper straw and tape it to the back of the heart shaped flower with clear tape – double tape will prevent the straw from moving.

Cut a leaf out of green paper and glue it onto the paper heart flower.

Done! Your paper heart flowers are ready to be given to someone special! Unless you want to make a bouquet, go back to your craft!
