Guys, you all know Mary Poppins, the woman who flew with an umbrella? We happened to read that story at the library today and came up with the idea to do this umbrella project.
We will show you how to make a summer umbrella that will protect us from the sun while building sand castles on the beach.
Plus, this umbrella can open and close, which makes this umbrella extremely special.
You won’t need many supplies for this project, but younger children will need help from an adult or older sibling.
This can be quite a difficult project, so make sure to follow all the steps and watch the video.
What you need:
Let’s get started!
Fold the paper to form a square…
…and cut off the excess.
When you open the square paper, you will see two triangles, one on the left, one on the right.
Now fold the paper…
… to form another triangle.
When you unfold the square paper, you will have 4 triangles.
Fold the paper in half to form a rectangle.
Open the rectangle.
Then repeat the same on the other side.
Open it again, …
…and form a smaller square by folding the two opposite squares inwards.
To get a square like this.
This step consists of 4 triangular folds.
Start by folding a triangle, …
…then open it…
…and fold it inside.
Reverse fold.
Fold it in half.
Repeat this step with the remaining three sides.
And so on until the last one…
…where you will have a kite-like shape left over.
Now we start folding 8 smaller triangles, 2 on each side.
Emphasize …
…to get a really nice fold.
And on and on…
… form a triangle.
Press each one firmly with your fingers.
Step by step…
… one by one…
… until the end…
…to the last person.
Fold triangle, fold back inside, repeat.
Completely around…
…until it looked like this.
Take another sheet of paper and repeat these 7 steps.
Continue your project by folding the paper to form a square…
Cut off the excess.
When you open the square paper, you will see two triangles, one on the left, one on the right.
Now fold the paper to form a triangle.
When you unfold the square paper, you will have 4 triangles.
Fold the paper in half to form a rectangle.
Open it up and cut along that line.
Fold the paper and cut off the excess…
… to get a smaller square.
Unfold the square and fold the paper to form a triangle.
Open the square and notice the 4 triangles.
Fold the paper in half to form a rectangle.
Expand the rectangle …
… then repeat the same on the other side.
Open it again…
…and form a smaller square by folding the two opposite squares inwards (just like you did with the previous square – with the green square in the steps above).
Repeat all previous steps to complete the upper umbrella canopy.
Take the smallest kite and cut along the line.
Cut the top off and make a small hole.
Take a large kite, cut the bottom along the line, …
…and cut the top off.
Take the remaining large kite, mark a straight line 1cm away from the existing line as shown in the picture…
…and cut it off.
Look closely at the picture and mark two straight lines starting from the middle.
Cut along them. You should leave some space between them, so be careful not to cut all the way through them.
The cuts will look like this.
You are ready to continue.
Open all 3 sheets of paper.
We will start working on the last kite.
Start folding the paper in between the triangles as shown.
Reverse all triangular folds.
You will end up with a shape that resembles a lemon squeezer.
Turn it over.
Begin folding each edge inwards into the lemon squeezer shape.
Until you get to this step.
From the side, your umbrella will look like this.
When finished, open the paper again.
Cut off the top of the lemon squeezer…
…and cut a small hole. These are your finished paper square parts.
Apply a little glue to the inside of the smaller umbrella (the upper umbrella part)…
…and glue it to the larger part (the large canopy part).
Apply a little glue to the outside of the lemon squeezer…
…and glue it inside the larger umbrella.
Thread the wooden stick through the holes in the umbrella.
Cut three strips of paper.
Apply a little glue to one of them and wrap it around the end of the stick to secure the umbrella when opened.
Pour a little glue under the wrapping paper and stick it to the top of the umbrella.
Let the glue dry.
If the wood is too long, cut off a section.
Your umbrella should now look like this.
Apply a little glue to the second strip of paper and wrap it around the end of the wooden stick.
Let the glue dry.
Press the tip of the lemon squeezer with your finger and apply a little glue to it.
Be careful not to get glue on the stick.
Just apply a little glue to the edge of the third strip of paper and stick it to the lemon squeezer.
Start wrapping it around the stick.
Then apply some glue to the remaining stripe and finish wrapping.
Let the glue dry completely.
Done!
