There are many types of shells that you can find on land or in the water. Children just love to explore their environment and always keep their eyes open for adventure. With this printable, the adventure can continue indoors too.
Creating a pop-up shell would be a fun game for little crafters. The pull-out mechanism opens the shell, where a beautiful large pun-shaped pearl pops out.
This tutorial will guide you step by step to create your own product.
We have designed two versions of the shell paper craft. One is a black and white version, so that children can color the shell parts as they wish or just choose a pre-colored template.
You’ll find 3 seashell puns in there and you can easily add more if you think of any (we’d love to hear).
The first sentence is a play on words “Happy to sea you”. The other is “Don’t be shellfish” and the last is “You are pearl-fect”.

First choose one of the two templates and print it out.
If you choose the printable version, color all the seashells with markers or crayons. The cutting part can begin. Use scissors and cut all the shell parts as shown in the picture below. We will start with a circular shell. Fold the paper along the dotted lines with your fingers or use a simple craft stick to create a nicer fold. Now it’s time to use your scissors again. After you’ve folded the shell “round” (in the previous step), you’ll need to cut along the lines you marked from the folded edge towards the outside of the shell. This will create a crease that will be the stem of the pearl and the caption.
The next step is an “adults only” step where you need to use a sharp craft knife. Make a straight cut in the pink shell to create a slit (the marked line). Continue by folding the “box”.
Use the craft knife again and make another straight cut.Apply glue to the “lid” area where it says glue. Now join the two ends together to form a box.Continue with these steps
It’s time to add the tongue to the shell. Apply a little glue to the tongue and glue it to the colored side (the area on the colored side is marked as a rectangle) of the shell as shown in the image below.
The next step is to assemble the pink and brown shell pieces (the half-moons). You will need to apply some glue to one half of the “shell circle” (the part without the notch). Since the pop-up body needs to remain flexible, make sure not to apply any glue to it.Once you have glued the parts together, connect the box part to the case and pull the tongue out through the gap in the case.Take the smallest part of the shell and apply glue to the marked area. You can also glue this part 3 steps in advance – the method shown in the video (when you glue the tongue to the half-moon part of the shell).Slide it inside the box and seal it.Now all you have to do is add the decorations. Open the case by pulling the tongue and glue the pearl and the words to the body.To close the shell, use the top of the shell (the smallest part you glued in the previous step).
Enjoy!
