Feeling festive yet? We sure are – and really excited to start sharing all the great Christmas tree crafts for kids to make!

We’ve made them from all sorts of materials, but our favorite is definitely paper. There’s nothing like saving money and kids love paper crafts.

We’ve created a template for this Christmas tree craft (you can get the template at the end of this tutorial), but you certainly may not need one because it’s actually incredibly easy to make as you’ll soon see.

You can do it with just paper OR you can get a little more fun, like we did, and add pom poms or gems – although you’ll have to keep a few things in mind – but we’ll talk more about this in the actual tutorial.

Ready? Let’s make this lovely Christmas craft!

How to make a 3D paper Christmas tree the easiest way

What you need:

  • our printable template (optional) – you can get this at the end of this tutorial (this is especially useful if you’re going to be making decorations to hang)
  • green paper – we recommend thicker printer paper or craft paper for this, if you are making a smaller version regular printer paper will be fine
  • drag
  • glue
  • yellow paper

Optional: decorations – tassels, glitter glue, gems, colored paper, fabric…

This would be a great Christmas craft for the classroom (with or without a template).

Or follow the picture instructions

You can make this pattern without our printable template.

If you choose our templates (which come in two sizes), please print them on thicker paper as regular paper will work for smaller templates but will not be durable enough for larger templates.

If you print the template on regular printer paper, it will stand up on its own with a moderate amount of ornaments (a few gems, pom poms or paper), but if the ornaments are too heavy, the tree will fall over (if you hang them on a string and use them as ornaments, that’s fine). Again, thicker printer paper or craft paper is best.

Cut out star and Christmas tree shapes.

Fold the small tree triangle in half (marked with the dashed line).

Fold it back.

Cut along the dashed line.

Now there are two ways to proceed…

You can either unfold the triangle first and fold each strip separately, or you can leave the folded triangle as is (like we did) and fold each second pair of strips (it doesn’t matter which way you fold, as the goal is to “mark” the folds).

Expand the tree.

You will see some strips of paper have folds and some do not (from the previous step).

Fold some sections so they face the “front” side, and fold some sections so they face the opposite side – essentially folding them at a 90-degree angle to the unfolded strips.

On the last two strips, put a little glue on the end and glue them to the base of the other strip (do the same with both). This will create a “trunk”.

Decorate

Cut stars out of yellow paper (two stars is better).

Glue the star to the top of the tree (both sides if you have two stars).

Decorate!

If using as a decoration, add a string on top for hanging.

There you go, this is definitely the easiest 3D paper Christmas tree craft ever!
