Fish is the perfect theme to do with your kids during summer vacation or summer camp, we really love sharing fish craft ideas with you – check out our paper plate rainbow fish theme (perfect for preschoolers and older kindergarteners).
We also love sharing all sorts of interactive paper toys (shark puppets?) and this surprise big mouth fish definitely fits the bill – it’s a fun project to make and kids can play with it too. You could even add a hidden message in the fish’s mouth for an extra wow factor.
As mentioned, you can use our template or make your own fish as part of a kids art project – this guide to drawing a fish might be useful if you choose the latter option.
How to Make a Printable Surprise Big Mouth Fish
What you need:
- our printable template (you can get it at the end of this tutorial – it’s completely optional)
- coloring supplies (we like markers for their vibrant colors)
- paper (heavier printing paper like cardstock or construction paper is best, regular printer paper is fine too)
Step by step instructions
Print out our template – we have two sizes available (1 design per sheet or 2 designs per sheet, the latter is perfect for classroom use). Alternatively, you can draw your own (or any other design – just check out our drawing guide for inspiration).
Color the fish. You can color with crayons, colored pencils, markers… We chose markers, just keep in mind that they work best on thicker printer paper – they can wrinkle and bleed through regular printer paper.
If you use colored pencils or crayons, you can use regular printer paper without any problem.
Once you have colored the fish pattern, it is time to start folding!
Fold along the top lip line (straight line) on the paper. Make sure the fold is really, really sharp – run a craft stick or similar tool over the fold. A sharp fold will make this paper craft much more interesting.
Next, bring the crease you just created to the lower lip line (creating the crease somewhere between the two lips).
Again, make sure the fold is flat and sharp.
And that’s it! Your surprise bigmouth is ready to start opening and closing its mouth.
