We’re big cat fans, this isn’t our first cat paper toy – just take a look at this pop out of the box cat paper toy, we’ll be making more!

While the pop-up cat is suitable for older children as some of the steps are a bit more difficult, this surprise big mouth cat is suitable for children of all ages.

If you are doing this activity for kids with young children or a large group, print out the template as it is very handy (it even comes in two sizes), if you are working with older children you could also use it as inspiration for an art project – have them draw their own cat. We have a cat drawing tutorial that might be helpful.

Are you ready to color and make a cute open-mouthed cat? Let’s get crafting!

How to make a surprise big mouth cat print

What you need:

  • our printable template (you can get it at the end of this tutorial – it’s completely optional)
  • coloring materials (markers are our choice, but you can color with any material)
  • paper (heavier printing paper like cardstock or construction paper is best, regular printer paper is fine too)

Step by step instructions

Start by printing out our template or drawing your own cat. If you print out our template, we highly recommend using thicker paper as it will make your paper craft more durable. Folding can be a little more difficult but it is worth it.

Once the template is printed, it’s time to color in the design. You can leave the background white or color it – if you’re feeling extra creative, you can even add details like grass and the like. Or a mouse in a cat’s mouth ;).

Since cats come in a variety of colors, choose the one you like best. You can also go beyond the usual colors – why not try making your cat pink!

Done coloring? Great! Let’s move on to the folding part.

No need to fold too much – start by folding along the upper lip line – across the entire width of the paper.

Make sure the folds are sharp – run your finger over the folds or better yet use a tool like a craft stick.

Next, bring the fold you just created to the line of your lower lip and press the paper down.

This will create another fold inside the mouth. Again, make it crispy!

And that’s all there is to it – you’ve just completed your amazing big mouth cat print craft.

Time to play with it.
