This project works wonderfully when done with markers because the colors really pop. Working with markers is also easier than using paint, so they’re great for younger children.

You can also use crayons if you are working with a group of young children and want to avoid unnecessary mess.

How to make abstract heart art for valentine’s day

What you need:

  • printable template (optional)
  • compass (or some round object)
  • white construction paper
  • black marker
  • colorful markers (warm and cool tones)

Step-by-step instructions

Start with a clean piece of white paper or use on our heart template designs.

Have your child draw a large heart in the middle of the paper with a black pen.

Ask them to take a ruler and draw a series of lines across the heart.

These lines can travel vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, both within and outside the heart.

You can also let your child draw the lines themselves without using a ruler.

Although you could stop there, it’s fun to add more shapes to this piece.

Use a compass or draw around round objects to create a few circles (you can also create other shapes, no need to stick to the circle).

Now comes the fun part: coloring!

This is a great opportunity to talk about warm and cool colors, or complementary colors.

For our hearts, we chose different shades of red, pink and purple, coloring each section.

For the outer part of the heart, we use cool colors like blue and other shades to create contrast.

Cooler colors will stand out against the warmer tones within the heart, creating abstraction.

Once they’ve colored all the pieces, step back and admire their abstract Valentine’s Day heart art!

Different shapes, lines and colors come together to create a unique work of art filled with love and creativity.

Perfect for kids Valentine’s Day crafts and Valentine’s Day gift ideas!
