Have your kids learn and weave their own little Easter basket. This is a really great project to do with kids, both at home and in the classroom.

The great thing about this Easter craft idea is that you can easily adapt it to suit all ages. You can have a simple basket that uses just a little yarn for younger children and a tightly woven basket that older children will make.

You can even ask your child to take it one step further and wrap the yarn around the handle of the basket.

Are you ready to make your own little basket? Let’s get started!

Easter Basket Weaving Craft

What you need:

  • our printable Easter basket template (you can find it at the end of this tutorial)
  • drag
  • hole punching machine
  • yarn (we like acrylic yarn)
  • printer
  • heavier paper

Let’s weave!

You can watch the video tutorial here

Or follow these simple step-by-step instructions

Print out our template (you can get it at the end of the tutorial). Thicker printer paper will work best for this as regular printer paper will be difficult (but not impossible) to work with.

Cut along the contour.

I recommend first cutting a circle along the short strips of paper and then cutting triangles between the strips.

Get a hole punch (you can find them at dollar stores). A regular hole punch will work, but it requires more patience and precision.

Punch all the marked holes on the bottom of the basket.

Fold the strips at the base.

Open.

Wrap one end of the yarn around one of the strips. Tie a knot.

We tie a knot around one of the longer strips, but it doesn’t matter where you start.

Now move in a circular motion, forming an S shape as you move.

Continue in the same direction, making a circle until you reach the punched holes.

Make paper needles for kids to use!

Now it’s time to thread the yarn through these holes. Older children can use real needles, while younger children can make “needle” pieces out of scrap paper.

Cut a needle shape (a long thin triangle). Fold it in half (lengthwise) and see if it fits through the hole. If it fits through easily then it’s good, if not then cut it a little bit to make it fit through.

After threading the yarn through, cut a small hole in the wider end of the paper needle and thread the yarn through.

You have just created a child safe needle.

Now thread the yarn through the holes.

We did two loops, but you can do more or less. Once you’re satisfied, tie a knot.

The last thing to do is make the basket handle.

Glue the two longest strips of paper to the top.

Done! Your handmade Easter basket is finished!
