Disguise a Turkey Project (Agamograph Craft)

We’re excited to share this fun camouflage turkey project idea because it takes this activity to the next level. Have your students make a turkey scribe craft, one image with a normal-looking turkey, and one image with a disguised turkey.

Just imagine how awesome your Thanksgiving bulletin board will look with these creations displayed on it. As people move through it, the turkey will quickly disguise itself depending on the viewing angle. Now, if this isn’t one of the coolest camouflage turkey printables then we don’t know what is.

Not familiar with turkey disguise activities? The Disguised Türkiye Project is a creative and educational assignment often given to elementary school students around Thanksgiving. This project is inspired by the popular book Turkey Trouble, which is a great book to read along with this project.

Based on the idea that turkeys may want to avoid being served as the main dish at Thanksgiving dinner, the project encourages students to dress up their own turkeys. Typically, the project is also accompanied by a writing assignment in which children are asked to describe their disguise design as well as explain why the costume is effective.

So how does ours work? Once assembled, when viewed from the left side, you will see a very regular looking turkey.

But when you look at this craft from the right side, a disguised turkey, no matter what your child designs, will appear.

Step-by-step instructions

Print out the templates. We recommend printing at least the background grid on heavier card stock/printing paper but this pattern works really well on regular printing paper.

There is a blank outline of the turkey on the right, this is where your students will design their costumes. The light outline serves as a guide as to where the camouflage should be drawn. The combination of black marker and colored pens is really great.

Also, have your child color the regular turkey, with regular turkey colors.

Once colored, cut along the lines. You can let your child leave the numbers to make assembly easier.

Take the numbered grid and start gluing the strips into the designated spaces.

The normal looking turkey goes into the boxes marked with numbers 1, 3, 4 and 7.

And the disguised person will enter the boxes marked with numbers 2, 4, 6 and 8.

Once all the parts are glued on, wait a bit for the glue to set.
