Your little hands grow so fast, so why not make a keepsake to remind you (and your child) of how tiny they once were.

Handprint arts and crafts are more for parents than kids (although we do have some fun projects that older kids can do themselves, leaving room for creativity). If you’re doing it yourself, this Valentine’s Day handprint art is better suited to older kids who have mastered scissor skills. If you’re doing it with younger kids, you’ll have to cut.

But doing something special for your mom, dad, brother, sister, grandparent, aunt, uncle or just a friend also brings its own rewards.

Handprint crafts can be a lot of fun and this Heart Shaped Handprint Arts and Crafts Idea for Valentine’s Day is quite easy to make, fun and makes a great keepsake.

You can adapt this idea to turn it into a craft project or a piece of art, read on for some more creative ideas.

Hope you enjoy this easy Valentine’s Day craft idea!

Valentine’s Day Handprint Heart Art or Craft Ideas

What you need:

  • red construction paper
  • pink craft paper (other colors are nice too)
  • White paper for base (optional)
  • red marker (optional)
  • glue
  • drag

We don’t recommend this as a classroom craft for kids who haven’t mastered scissor skills yet, as the teacher may get blisters (although you can modify the project a bit to make it classroom friendly even for preschoolers). All you have to do is paint the hands and press them down into the shape of a heart, thus avoiding the cutting and weaving.

There are two ways to start this project. Draw your right and left hands on red and pink construction paper or have two children (whose hands should be the same size) draw their hands (one for each child) on the paper to form a heart.Svg%3E

Once you have traced your hand on the paper, cut out the outline of your hand.

Put them together to form a heart shape.Svg%3E

Glue the thumb of one hand to the fingers of the other. Now interlace a few fingers and add glue as you go, securing the shape.

There is no need to glue all your fingers together, just enough to keep your hands together.Svg%3E

If needed, trim the “palms” a bit to make them more heart-shaped.Svg%3E

You can leave the handprint heart as is or stick the handprint heart on a white piece of paper and draw a heart around it.Svg%3E

Now for some variations on this handprint heart. To make it a little more artistic, have the kids work on two different sheets of paper, decorate them (preferably with mixed media) to their liking, and use them to draw their hands. This is even better if two different kids hold hands, each contributing a piece of the heart to be pieced together.
