In some countries, these adorable little mammals are highly protected, so it is our duty to keep them safe. Although hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, we still have the opportunity to see these adorable creatures during the day.
Hedgehogs are also omnivores, meaning they eat plants and other animals. While you might think they can’t move that fast, they can run really, really fast, which is pretty impressive.
So let’s get crafty and welcome this little guy!
We have two versions – you can color the black and white template or simply print out the pre-colored version of the pop-up hedgehog craft.
You will find all the steps needed to make a pop up paper craft on how to stitch a hedgehog in the tutorial below.
The hedgehog uses a pull-out mechanism, meaning it pops out when you pull its tail.
There are also 3 hedgehog puns to make your craft even cuter! When you pull the hedgehog mechanism, a fun hedgehog themed pun will appear.
The first pun is: “You look sharp today”, the second pun is “How about a hug?” and the last pun (the hedgehog holding an apple) is the pun “I really love you”.
If you want, you can write a pun or some other text to highlight and paste into the pop-out mechanism.
Check out the tutorial for all the steps and make your own pop-up hedgehog!
How to Make This Pop Up Hedgehog Paper Craft
What you need:
- templates – black and white templates or pre-colored templates (you will find them at the end of the tutorial)
- printer
- paper (we use thicker printing paper – 160 GSM).
- drag
- glue
- Craft knife (adults only)
- coloring material for the black and white version of the pattern (colored pencils, markers, crayons)
If you don’t have thicker paper at home, you can print the template on a regular paper and paste it onto another paper to make it thicker.

Choose and print the version you like best.
Cut out all the pieces on both pages of the selected pattern.
We’ll start with the “adults only” part, where you’ll need a sharp craft knife, so be really careful. Make a precise cut along the marked line to create a slit in the “box.”
Make another cut on the elliptical part of the hedgehog.
Continue using the craft knife to make another cut below the hedgehog’s belly.
Now that you have made all the slits, fold the hedgehog along the dotted lines using a craft stick (we just did it with our fingers).
Hold the part you just folded in your hand and cut into the folded part (along the marked lines) to create the pop-up mechanism.
“Unfold” the hedgehog by folding it in the opposite direction. Use your fingers to push out the slits you just made with the scissors so that it looks like the image below.
What you need to do now is fold the “semi-circle” part with a craft stick (you can also use a ruler or your skillful fingers).
Make a box for the hedgehog by folding along straight lines.
We love using our simple craft stick to create beautiful folds.
Apply some glue.
Pin the ends together and “voila” – the box is complete.
Now, apply some glue to the hedgehog’s tail.
Glue the tail to the “semi-circle” section that we folded 6 steps ago. Note that the long tail (where it says glue) is glued directly to the rectangle of the “semi-circle” section. The tail should be glued face down to that section.
Now, insert the two pieces you just glued into the hedgehog’s box and pull its tail out through the gap.
Continue with these steps
We need to glue the main part of the hedgehog onto the “semi-circle” part. Only apply a little glue to one half of the ellipse. Be careful not to get glue into the pop-up mechanism (the one you made with scissors).
It is also important to apply the glue to the correct ellipse. Apply the glue to the part that is not covered by the notch you made with the craft knife.
Carefully glue the elliptical part to the semicircular part.
Grab the hedgehog’s tail and thread it through the gap as shown below.
We need to “cover” the hedgehog, so apply some glue to the back of the box.
Of course the box has to be glued to the ellipse.
This craft needs a mechanism to close the hedgehog, so apply a little glue to the small part that looks like a “tail”.
Slide that part inside the box and glue it “into” the area where the tail is attached.
Continue with the “tail-like” part and slide it through the opening (this part should be coming out at the back of the ship).
Now it’s time to decorate our awesome hedgehog. Apply some glue to the pop-up mechanism.
Finally, choose your favorite pun from the template (or your own caption) and paste it into the mechanism.
Close the hedgehog by pulling the “tail-like” part at the back of the plane, and open it by pulling its tail.
Printable hedgehog paper craft finished.
