I have always loved drawing and feel extremely proud when I learn how to draw something new.

However, drawing is not my natural talent, I struggled with it for a while because I wanted my creations to be perfect from a young age (I was never asked or expected to have them perfect, it was just something that happened in my head).

I needed some guidance to realize that you can do things step by step and simple shapes can turn into beautiful creations.

While I believe the best creations come naturally, sometimes we need to draw with direction to master the basics. And once you have the basics down, like knowing how to draw a butterfly, you can take things from there and add your own personal touch. It has definitely helped me build my confidence in drawing.

We always like to keep things easy and it’s time for us to practice drawing too – so we’re starting a new tutorial series – dedicated to drawing for kids.

Each of our tutorials comes with a printable PDF template that you can print and use at home or in the classroom to help kids create their creations.

We really hope our drawing tutorial series will inspire your child to pursue their passion for drawing!

How to draw a butterfly step by step for kids

I’ve always loved butterflies, and since insects are quite a popular subject with kids, I thought it would be the perfect subject to draw first.

They may seem a bit difficult to draw, but as you take it step by step, you’ll soon be a butterfly drawing master!

Are you ready to draw your own butterfly?

Let’s get started!

What you need;

Follow these step by step drawing instructions

Print out our butterfly drawing template with complete steps and blanks for you to draw.

Step 1

Start by drawing a circle for the head. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect.

Tip: The more circles you draw, the better they will look. Practice makes perfect!

Next, let’s draw the body shape.

You can do it in one stroke or two, starting at the top and connecting at the bottom.

Draw the first pair of wings. Try to make them symmetrical.

Now draw a second pair of wings. They are usually a little smaller than the first pair, but there is nothing wrong with them being the same size or even larger.

Now let’s draw a cute little face.

Everyone loves a smiling butterfly :). I love it when these cute creatures stick their tongues out, so be sure to draw that too.

Add finishing touches and color.

Draw circles inside the wings (you can also draw other markings) and a few stripes on the butterfly’s body.

Congratulations! You have learned how to draw a simple butterfly!

All you have to do is color the butterfly drawing.
