Reading is great! The more your kids read, the better (or you read to them). But we think books can be even more fun when they come with a cute bookmark. And what better way to make one than by making your own?
These DIY corner bookmarks are super fun to make. Since you only need a few basic folds to make them, they make a great origami project for kids and beginners. What’s even better is that there are a million ways you can decorate them (one for every book hint, hint).
We’ve ventured into the jungle/safari theme, we’ve created a fierce looking tiger and now it’s time to add the lion corner bookmark to the club (there will be a few more to come!).
Ready to learn how to make an origami corner bookmark? Let’s make one (or ten).
How to fold a Lion Corner bookmark
What you need:
- orange origami paper (or regular printer paper cut into squares)
- brown paper
- white paper
- red paper
- vibrating eye patches or black eye markers
- glue
- scissors (regular scissors and zigzag scissors – just regular scissors will do)

Or follow this step-by-step folding guide
Make a star shape by folding the orange origami paper in half to form a triangle (colored side out).
You can skip this step – it can make folding easier for younger children, but it’s not required.
Fold it in half again – press the bottom. This will mark the middle.
Reopen the first triangle.
Take one layer of paper – holding the top corner of the triangle – and fold it down towards the bottom of the triangle.
Take the right corner of the triangle and fold it to the middle of the triangle (at the bottom).
Repeat with the other side.
Open.
Fold the right corner again, this time towards the top of the triangle.
Do the same on the other side.
Place the fabric edges into the bag.
You have your basic corner bookmark design and are ready to decorate.
Let’s make a lion corner bookmark.
Place the bookmark in the corner on a sheet of brown paper.
Draw a “mane” around the bookmark.
Cut the mane off.
Stick it on the back of the bookmark.
Alternatively, cut out a snout from brown paper and glue it to the bookmark.
Draw or glue eyes.
Use scissors to cut out the serrated edges and glue them inside the bookmark.
Cut out the fangs and glue them inside the lion bookmark.
Last but not least, cut out a tongue from red or pink paper and glue it to the inside (bottom) of the bookmark in the corner.
And that completes your first of many lion corner bookmarks.
