Christmas is the most magical time of the year and a great time to create magical memories. This is the time to create keepsakes for the whole family to cherish and this Christmas memory photo is one that will be treasured for a long time. Print out one of our templates (or all), take a photo of your child and together you can turn them into festive-looking elves, happy reindeer or even Santa.

How to make a movable paper doll Christmas photo craft

What you need:

  • one or more of our doll models
  • drag
  • split pins/paper screws or glue (you can buy paper screws at most office and craft stores)
  • glue
  • coloring material if printing black and white version
  • photo of your child’s head

Step-by-step instructions

Start by printing the sample sheet. We’ve got 3 festive figures for you to choose from and they’re all available in black, white and full color and come in two sizes. So choose one (or all) that best suits your needs.

Regular paper is not suitable for this type of paper, unless you plan to laminate the paper doll once completed (or laminate the pieces of paper if making the doll movable).

Start by cutting out all the pieces of the pattern. While Santa and Elves are pretty easy to cut, reindeer (although super cute) are the hardest to cut, so if you’re working with young children, you’ll probably need to assist them. Still, great for a creative parent-child session to build memories.

Once all the pieces are cut, we can move on to the next step.

Assemble Christmas paper dolls

All the dolls are assembled the same way, with the reindeer having the most “extra parts.”

If you are making a movable doll, the first thing you need to do is punch holes in the arms, legs and body (through the small points indicated).

Older children can use a sawing pin to make holes, while for younger children we recommend using an easier-to-operate tool, such as a skewer (under adult supervision). If you have large split pins, a single hole punch can also do the job.

You can also skip dividing the pins altogether and just stick the arms and legs on the body.

You will need 4 divided pins for each doll. Push the first split pin through one of the holes in the stem.

Flip the doll around and push the split pin through the hole in the relevant body part (arm or leg).

Spread the divided pin to secure it.

Do the same with the remaining 3 body parts.

Apply glue to the photo or area within the dotted line and stick the photo to the camera body.

For Santa Claus, stick Santa’s head and optionally put a beard on the photo.

For the Elf, glue the hat onto the photo.

As for the reindeer, put a red nose on the nose…

And antlers have ears on their heads.

All has been done.

You can elf yourself
