We do a lot of layered decorations around the house, they’re really personal and you can create lots of fun things – add a Santa hat to your kids’ photos (or photos of your dogs and cats) , make layered snow globe ornaments to hang on your tree, add antlers and more. However, multi-layered types are often more aimed at “adults”. There’s a limit to how young people can participate, so for this project we thought contact paper would be a better choice – decorating this is just easier for little hands little.

How to make handmade photos with snow globes

What you need:

  • our snow globe decoration template
  • Self-adhesive transparent contact paper/foil
  • glue
  • drag
  • Photo
  • hand painted white
  • brush
  • optional: coloring material

Step-by-step instructions

Print the template on heavier card stock/printing paper.

If you want to make your snow globe photo more colorful, color the globe background.

After coloring, you or your child can also write names or notes on the globe.

Cut the inner circle, following the dashed line.

The easiest way to do this is to first punch a hole in the center (marked with a gray dot) and start cutting from there.

Cut out a rectangle of sticker paper, just slightly larger than the round part of the globe.

Place it on your work surface, sticky side up…

…and place the template on top, covering the hole with paper.

Make some snow. Draw a snowy hill and add a few snowflakes – your finger or q tip will create beautiful snowflakes.

You can also draw other things – Christmas trees, for example.

Next is the photo.

If you’re doing this project with kids in class, take photos a few days before. Kids jumping in the air (in winter clothes) is a great pose for this one, but having them pose any other way would be great too.

Cut around the body and press the cut photo on the adhesive paper.

Tape another sheet of contact paper to the front of the snow globe, covering up the photo and other winter/Christmas details.

Next up are some cuts. Cut along the dashed line, around the pattern.

Finally, apply glue to the area designated for gluing, conveniently marked with the word glue.

Glue the ends together, hold for a while to let the glue set.

All has been done! Your Snowglobe Craft photo is complete and ready to display.
