Snail Shell Snail Craft

We collect all sorts of interesting natural materials on our walks and this time we went shell hunting to make this lovely shell craft.

You can find these shells near forests, in meadows, fields (plowed fields can be full of these shells and quite a few are intact) and I’m sure you can even buy them in online stores.

The more you do them the better they will look.

What you need

  • snail shell
  • white air dry clay model
  • gel pens, markers, paints…
  • wiggling eyes (this snail isn’t really anatomically correct so it can easily hurt little hands)

If you have just come back from a hike, the first thing to do is to wash the shells as they may still have some dirt on them. Let them dry.

Our shells are quite old so they all have a nice pale colour to start with. If your shells aren’t this colour you can always paint them white.

Start coloring and doodling. We colored with paint, markers, and metallic gel pens (silver pens look great on black).

Snail Shell Drawing

Let the shell dry while you process the snail.

We used Model Magic Air Dry clay because it was the softest clay I have ever used (like marshmallow) so it was easy to work with. Shape the snail and press it into the snail shell.

Snail Craft Carving

Allow to dry according to air dry clay instructions.

Glue two fake eyes on.
