We wanted to make a super springtime craft and with Easter wrapping up in a little bit of Easter too! And since we’re all about easy and frugal, most of the time the idea had to fit that in too.

Easter is one of those holidays where you can really get crafty, and it’s not just about decorating eggs. There are 1000 ways to do anything Easter-style, and if they include a chick or a bunny, you’re on to a winner (sheep are welcome too, of course).

Lately our favorite crafting material has been paper, it’s one of the most versatile crafting materials ever and we’ve been getting really, really creative with simple paper strips so we decided to go that route again.

So we came up with the idea of a spring meadow (and we really like it).

This idea is also fun for the classroom, you can adapt it for different age groups (we’ll talk more about this in the tutorial) and if you let each child make their own “patch” then you can put them all together into one big Easter craft display! Tons of chicks! So much cuteness! You could also mix things up a bit and have some kids make chicks, others make sheep, then some kids can make bunnies and others even make some spring flowers.

What you need:

To make this spring chick paper craft, you will need the following:

  • white construction paper for base
  • green paper (printing paper is easy to work with, craft paper is fine too)
  • paper glue (we think glue sticks work best)
  • scissors or paper cutter
  • yellow paper for chicks
  • vibrating eye patch (or google eye or just regular marker)
  • circle punch (you can draw and cut out circles instead)
  • orange paper for the beak (or orange pen)

Do you have everything you need? Just follow our instructions and get started. If you don’t have any colored paper, you can always have your kids color it before you start this craft.

Adding more colors is also good because kids can also make flowers, bunnies, etc.

We have prepared both video tutorials for you to watch and visual tutorials (with tips and tricks).

Or follow the step-by-step instructions below

Take the green paper and cut it into strips. Cut along the length of the paper, you want to make the strips longer rather than shorter. Don’t worry if they are shorter as you can always glue more strips together if needed.

The paper strips do not need to be the same width and length.

If younger children are making this craft, cut (or have them cut) wider strips of paper as they will be easier to handle. Older children can make them thinner.

Once you have enough, move on to the next step, you can always cut more if needed.

Take white background paper.

Apply glue to an angle – the surface you apply glue to should be as wide as the strip of paper you will be gluing to.

Take a strip of paper and glue one end to the white base where you applied glue.

Press down for a moment to let the glue set.

Continue applying glue, this time keeping a straight line with the strip of paper but not applying along the entire line.

Leave a “clear” space and apply a small amount to one spot – about 2-5 cm from the corner where you first applied the glue.

Now glue the pre-glued strip of paper to the base at that point.

Curve it a little – make a wave shape. Press down for a moment to let the glue set.

Repeat until you get to the other corner, making the distance between the “glue points” different and making the arches different sizes as well. There’s nothing wrong with them all being the same.

If you run out of paper, just grab another sheet and continue.

Take another strip of paper and repeat. Repeat with all until the entire base is covered.

Some strips of paper may be sticking out of the edge of your pasture :).

Cut them off.

Time to add Easter chicks to this spring chick paper craft 😉

Use a stapler and staple a few circles.

You can also use scissors – we often draw around cups, lids and all kinds of containers to get a circle and then use scissors to cut along that line.

Cut two wings for each chick using yellow cardboard.

Glue them to the back of the paper circle (both sides can be backs at this point).

Cut out cute little beaks from orange cardstock. Glue them onto the chicks.

Also, stick on two moving eye stickers or draw chick eyes.

Stick the chicks on the grass.
