This is a perfect little project for a rainy summer day.

How to make colorful fish art

What you need:

  • printable template (optional)
  • black cardboard (other colors are great too)
  • stained or hand painted (color of your choice)
  • paintbrush
  • black marker
  • drag
  • adhesive

Step-by-step instructions

We will be making ours on black cardstock as it provides a nice contrast to the craft paints we are using.

You can use any other color, adapting it to the art supplies your child is using (if you’re using watercolor, choose a brighter paper).

Create a water scene. We are using different shades of blue to create the waves. Start by drawing lines from top to bottom, leaving enough space in between them to fill them with other colors.

We recommend starting with smaller quantities and larger distances. You can always come back to the same color later.

Use another blue color and draw lines between the lines you drew before.

Again, go from top to bottom.

You don’t have to use just one color – to brighten things up, the next color we used was white.

Let the children continue drawing lines, adding more lines in between where needed to fill the entire scene.

Let the paint dry.

In the meantime, print out the fish template (or let your kids draw their own).

It’s time to draw the fish. Draw eyes (or use googly eyes).

Have your children draw the fish using whatever art supplies they want.

For example, paint the fish’s body with watercolor.

You can make the fish one color or many colors.

Add scales or omit them.

Let them get creative with their fish decorations.

Cut out all the fish shapes from the template and glue them to the painted cardstock.

Aren’t they beautiful?

Enjoy your child’s colorful fish art creations!

We think it looks amazing!
