What a fun project to learn about warm and cool colors.
What you need:
You can use our printable sunset template with the black lines already drawn so all you have to do is draw the image, or you can let the kids draw their own scene from scratch.
Start by drawing wavy lines on the underside of the paper.
Next, draw a circle above the waves, creating the sun.
Draw straight lines to create rays.
Then, draw pencil lines with a thick black marker to define the shape and create a bold outline.
Color the waves with cool colors (various shades of blue; you can also use green)
This is a great opportunity to talk about cool and warm colors with your child.
You can let them play with different shades of blue or choose other fun colors to make waves.
Next, paint the sun with bright yellow paint, as the focal point of the sunset scene.
Color the rays with yellow and other warm colors.
Orange and bright red are perfect for this project.
Paint in all rays.
Let the paint dry and use the black marker again to draw along the lines.
All done!
The interaction between cool blues, warm yellows and oranges creates a wonderful summer scene.
All that’s left to do is proudly display your child’s artwork.
Have fun painting!
